2006 Championship Goes To Kasper's
The 2006 MBL Championship at Zirkel Field in front of a crowd exceeding a hundred fans started with a bang as Kasper's exploded in the top of the first inning. Top of the order hitter's for Kasper's Andy Pergande and Mike Landgraf opened with walks and were followed by five hits before the second out was recorded. By the end of the half inning Kasper's had sent twelve batters to the dish and scored eight runs. Leading many to believe a slugfest was about to ensue, in the bottom of the first Johnny V's top three hitters, Dan Marx, Rob Weist and Paul Lennart opened with three consecutive hits to get on the board. Johnny V's posted 2 runs in the inning to give their squad hope for a comeback. However, Kasper's pitcher Todd Eckert settled in, and throwing primarily heat with a breaking ball mixed in, allowed only one more hit the rest of the game. Eckert controlled the strike zone all day by hitting spots inside on fastballs then snapping off breaking balls to get ahead in the count, and pitching to contact against the off balance hitters. On the day he recorded four strikeouts and allowed only four hits. At the plate Eckert went four of five from the eighth spot rounding out a huge balanced attack, which included every starter in the Kasper's line-up getting on base at least once, and six hitters getting multipe hits: Mike Landgraf 3-5, Rich Galenski 3-4, Eric Kraderl 2-5, Tony Landgraf 3-5, headcoach Matt Mundt 3-4 and Eckert 4-5.

The first weekend of the MBL playoffs completed Sunday afternoon with three regular season division leaders advancing to the Final Four. The semi-finals and championship will be played on Saturday August 19 and Sunday August 20.

Semi-finals:
Harden Field @ 6pm Saturday August 19:
O'Brien's/Milwaukee Harley Davidson hosting Kasper's

Zirkel Field @ 6pm Saturday August 19:
Johnny V's hosting Franklin Barber Plumbing

Championship:
Zirkel Field @ 4pm Sunday August 20

If the Saturday games are rained out, the Semi-finals will be held at noon on Sunday August 20, one at Simmons, one TBD.

Division Championship Results:
Saturday Games
Texx's Royals 11 Long Wongs 3
Alex Arcano pitched the complete game victory. The Royals broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the 4th with a five run inning.

McGinn's over Wauwatosa Sluggo's

Johnny V's Classic Cafe 13 Colonel Hart's 4
Johnny V's offense hammered out 15 hits and scored in every inning highlighted by a 4-run 1st inning. Dan Marx and Paul Lennart each had 3 hits while Brad Pelzak pitched 4 scoreless innings to get the win. Mike Grabel's hit a 3-run homer for Colonel Hart's.

Brown Deer Supreme Builders 2 South Milwaukee Arcade 1
After losing four of their last five games, the defending champs found their winning ways as they beat South Milwaukee Arcade in a thrilling 8 inning game. The Builders scored in the second with a two out RBI single by Josh Wendorf. Arcade then tied it up in the bottom of the third as Matt Thomas had a ground out RBI. The final run came in the top of the eighth with bases loaded and one out. Ryan Diaz hit a ground ball to the third baseman who threw home to get an out. Attempting to turn the double play at first, the ball got away and allowed Colin Moser to score. Diaz then sat down three consecutive batters to end the game. Diaz and Nate Marlowe eliminated the anticipation of a high scoring game as both pitchers threw an impressive complete game. Arcade's Marlowe scattered nine hits and gave up only one earn run. On the flip side, Builder's ace Diaz threw a three hitter and received the hard earned win. Diaz had help with the Builder's defense (which won the game) that did not commit an error for the first time all season. Supreme Builder's were on offense led by Sean Carolan going 2 for 4 and Bry Rapp going 3 for 3.

Sunday Games
Johnny V's Classic Cafe 14 Varsity Club 5
Johnny V's pulled away in the 3rd inning with 9 runs. Paul Lennart had 2 hits and drove in 3 runs. Mike Gramarossa picked up the win by going the distance while scattering 9 hits. Travis Rose and Steve Budny had 2 hits each for the Varsity Club.

O'Brien's/Milwaukee Harley Davidson 4 Texx's Royals 2
Mike Drover's walk-off homerun in the bottom of the seventh capped off a tremendously well played game. The Royals jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings but would not score again as Jim Vielbaum pitched the complete game victory. Royal's pitcher Doug Paradowski led his team by throwing four no-hit innings, including retiring the first nine batters. O'Brien's/Milw. HD scored one unearned in the fourth to stay within striking distance of the league's most improved team of 2006. The score would remain 2-1 until the bottom of the seventh when Tim Heling led off with a walk and stole second base. Jon Stocks hit a double to left center to drive in Heling and set the stage for Drover who hit the first pitch over the left field fence for the win.

Kasper's 12 McGinn's 1

Franklin Barber Plumbing 4 Brown Deer Supreme Builders 2

The Milwaukee Baseball League Division Playoffs begin this weekend at Harden Field located at 37th and Howard within Zablocki Park and Zirkel Field located at 84th and Cleveland within McCarty Park.

Here are the Division Playoff Semifinal match-ups on Saturday August 12 (home listed first):

4pm at Harden: McGinns v Wauwatosa Sluggo's
1pm at Zirkel: Johnny V's v Colonel Hart's

The Sunday Division Playoff games are listed correctly on the online schedule.

If the games on Saturday are rained out, the games will be made up on Sunday, with the winner playing a doubleheader v the first place team in the division. In this scenario, games on Sunday would run at Harden and Zirkel at noon, 2:45, 5:30 and 8:15. Hopefully this doesn't occur.

Regarding player eligibility: All players should have IDs with them at playoff games, have been on your team's rosters before July 9, and appeared in half of your team's games. If there is a dispute, note the dispute and contact me immediately after the game is played. Any player without an ID, whose eligibility is in dispute will likely cause the team he played for to forfeit. Any playoff forfeits will be charged $110, not the $55 normally charged.

Non-playoff team exhibitions:
Sunday Aug. 13 Noon at Simmons: MPD v Blue Jays
Sunday Aug. 13 2:30 at Simmons: Club Paragon v Planet Markeys

Sunday Aug. 20 Noon at Simmons: Planet Markey's v MPD
Sunday Aug. 20 2:30 at Simmons: Blue Jays v Club Paragon

Flip a coin for home team. Catchers call balls and strikes, bases coaches call basepaths. Be gentleman. Have fun. If a club is short on players, feel free to swap. This is an excellent opportunity to try-out new players. Players eliminated from the playoffs, feel free to contact managers playing in these exhibitions to find out if they need extra players.

I'm applying for the fall park permit this week. Looks like we'll be assigned two diamonds each of the final three weeks of September (10,17,24). Details to follow next week.

Treat's/Braeger Blue Jays 6 Long Wongs 4

Long Wongs 5 Treat's Blue Jays 4
Kirk Spano's diving backhanded grab off the short hop of a rocket down the third base line and throw out kept the Blue Jays from jumping out in the first inning. In the third, Dan Yesbeck, who caught all 14 innings on the day for Long Wongs, threw out a base stealer at third to again thwart a Jays rally. The Jay's did stake a 3-1 lead in the 4th however on Don Klimeck's 2 rbi triple. Long Wong's finally rallied against the ironman pitching of Nick Banwieringen, who threw all 13 innings on the day for the Blue Jays. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Brian Jaeger (2-3), who scored Long Wongs previous run in the second, singled in the tying runs. Tom Minior (2-3), who had driven in Jaeger in the second, again came through with a clutch hit, driving in both Jaeger and Greg Ketz. July 14-16

O'Brien's/Milw. HD 14 Colonel Hart's 10
Jon Stocks went 3-3 against his former team leading O'Brien's/ Milw Harley-Davidson to a win. Chris Sanders continued swinging a hot bat with a double and a triple, while Jason Peters and Mike Drover chipped in two hits apiece. OB's/Milw. HD jumped out to a 9-1 lead after three innings only to have Colonel Hart's score 6 in the top of the fourth highlighted by a bases loaded double by Mike Grabek followed by a two run home run from Bobby Jankowski. OB's/Milw HD's pitcher Jim Vielbaum pitched a complete game striking out 6 to get the victory.

Planet Markey's Indians 7 Texx's Royals 4 SUSPENDED due to lighting
This game will be finished on Friday August 4. Only player involved in the first game may play.

Club Paragon 6 Varsity Club 4 (8inn)
Club Paragon put together 8 solid innings of baseball to pull out the 6-4 victory. After early runs for both teams, Connor Broderick took the mound in the 4th to quiet the Varsity Club bats. Paragon scored 1 in the seventh and 2 in the eighth to pull off the upset.

Long Wongs 11 McGinn's 10 (9inn)
These teams decided a long one on the 120 degree ruby red clirt was a good idea, going nine innings in just under the 3 hour time limit. McGinn's jumped out with a six run top of the first keyed by several hard hit balls. Long Wongs answered in the bottom of the first with six of their own keyed by consecutive hits at the top of the order. Lead off man Aaron Krueger singled, was driven in by Kirk Spano's double, who in turn was driven in by Adam Graves triple. Also getting key hits in the inning were Drew Dean, Mike Fuss (back from fishing) and the supernatural Brian Jaeger who had wrist surgery just two days earlier. From here on the pitchers dueled, as Greg Ketz ate up five innings for Long Wongs against Dan Mehigan who pitched nine solid gutty innings for McGinn's. Josh Sopczak came in to get the victory allowing only one run over four innings as Graves, Spano, Ben Garvey, Dean and Ketz all made key defensive plays (Graves and Spano looking like acrobats). Catcher Franciso Romero- who caught all nine grueling innings much to the delight of his wife who had been hoping he'd lose a few pounds- threw out a key McGinn's baserunner attempting to steal in the seventh likely keeping the McGinn's lead entering the bottom of the seventh at one run. In the bottom of the seventh Josh Sopczak drove in Ben Garvey on a liner to right to send the game into extra frames. Then in the bottom of the ninth, with two outs and runners on first and second, Aaron Krueger went with a pitch and punched the ball into shallow rightfield to drive in Sopczak, who had gotten on with his second hit, for the winning run.

Yeaaaaaaaah, no rainouts!!!

A few things to note before game summaries:
1. Bats: -3, not -5, see the rules
2. Challenging the strike zone can get you ejected after very little commentary, I speak from experience and observation.
3. Fields are what they are. Take the time to vote well and understand that Milwaukee County's financial problems stem from decades of poor money management and an overwhelming social welfare system. County Executive Scott Walker is supporting a separate Park's District that would handle it's own money instead of being lumped in with the general County budget. I think we should strongly consider supporting this proposal as a group.
4. Thank you scorekeepers & umpires for your efforts in helping us restore this league to the high status it was years ago.

Weather and fields look good for games of May 20 & 21.

Remember to keep a scorebook in case we have a game without a scorekeeper.

Also, remind the park personnel to open the scorer's booth and turn on the scoreboard.

Get your rosters emailed to Jim and I, and mail waiver forms to me, this week. Teams not complying will have wins recorded as ties for May and will forfeit games in June if these items aren't attended to by then.

Varsity Club Bulldawgs 13 Merry's Indians 1: The Bulldawgs took advantage of walks and inconsistant fielding to post a 13-1 victory in the second game of the double header. Mike B pitched a complete game striking 9 batters. The Varsity Club offense was supported by Steve's 2 hits with both Mike G and Rob having 2 RBI's.

McGinn's 15 Braeger Treat's Blue Jays 4: Solid hitting up and down the lineup carried McGinn's to the victory. Two pitchers combined to keep Blue Jays in check.

It was a close game in the first two innings with Colonel Harts taking an early 3 to 1 lead in the second inning on a single by Chad Torn. Walks became an issue for Colonel Harts later in the game as The Arcade was able to string together strong 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings by driving in runners with timely hitting.

Long Wongs 10 Texx's Royals 0: Long Wongs and Texx's Royals took two for the league by playing a doubleheader at dandylion field at Froemming Park in Franklin. In the Royals first, Joe Cefalu and Steve Rappl singled to begin a promising inning before Spano ranged behind second, stepped to the bag and threw to first to finish a double play that ended the Royals threat. In the second and third Spano (2-3, 3rbi, 1r) drove in Kumm (2-3, 2rbi, 3r, 2 doubles) two more times. Dan Scherrer also singled in a run early to help lead a big Wong attack. The Royals were lead offensively by the fiery Joe Cefalu, Mike Paradowski, Scott Rappl and Steve Rappl. Joe, Mike, and Steve went 3 of 4, and Scott went 2 of 3. Steve came up with the bases loaded and 2 outs in the 7th, and came through with a single to score the game winner.

SEASON STARTS THIS WEEKEND!
The weather report looks favorable so get your cleats, glove and bat ready. The schedule is final except for some home/away adjustments that will be taken care of soon. I'll send an email when I've had time to figure it out. The first week is correct. Players & Managers- please print your own schedule.

Managers: Although we have scorekeepers this year, the winning team must still submit an online game summary the day of or day after winning. Teams must still keep scorebooks (which can be bought for $3 at Burghardt's). If a game has no scorekeeper, both managers must keeps stats, do a quick post game review with each other and the winning manager must submit those games stats to Jim Rinelli via email that week.

RE: Rainouts: Please check the website the night before or morning of games to check and see if there are cancellations. If you see nothing by three hours prior to the game assume the game is being played or will be an umpires decision. Managers can call me to verify if in doubt.

Potential Players:
We had a successful tryout on April 9. However, we are still looking for guys to play ball and fill out rosters this summer. In high demand are "up the middle" players. If you are interested please send a "New Player" application found on the scroll bar above. Cost to play is generally $50 to $150 depending on the team. Also, take it upon yourself to contact managers directly by email as found on the schedule. Since we are already starting, new players will likely see limited playing time early as they work into their teams depth chart. Most teams are discounting your player fee in light of this. Establishing yourself in the league and with a club is good way to get back into or continue playing baseball going forward.

Our year end banquet this year will be a fund raiser. We would like each team to bring at least 15 players and/or guests. Entry will be $10 each, which will include appetizer buffett and two free beers (or until half barrel is gone) at CLUB PARAGON. Half of the money raised per team will be applied to that club's 2007 league fee.

Next League Meeting:
Sunday, February 26th @ 7pm at Long Wongs
All teams should have at least one deposit made to hold their spot as we now move to scheduling. $1000 total now due less current deposits.
It looks like Club Paragon will be the sponsor for the Expansion team which will be filled with several free agents, Marquette High & Riverside alum.
Our first meeting of 2006 at Long Wongs went well. The league will be adding official score keepers this year so that MBL records can be viewed alongside existing County Minor and Open records. Also, the league finances were announced and the league is currently carrying a $1500 surplus and expects to add a small amount this season after all expenses. In addition to several rules updates, the league decided to add an expansion team in addition to the new teams entering the league.

Expansion!

The 2006 Milwaukee Baseball League season will kick off with four new teams! Added for this coming season are teams from South Milwaukee, Wauwatosa, Milwaukee and a league organized expansion club. Our new managers are Steve Sosella from the South Milwaukee club, Jeff Brostowitz from the Wauwatosa club and Dave Barth of the Milwaukee club.

The expansion club is seeking a core of players and a manager. If you are interested in managing please contact Kirk Spano via email. The league is helping to find sponsorship and getting the team started. There are already a small group of solid players available and we will be looking to fill out the roster this spring.

Please welcome our new sponsors with a visit: the South Milwaukee Arcade (1200 Madison Ave in South Milwaukee) which features bowling and a bar and Sluggo's Sport's Pub and Grill (127th & Burleigh). The Milwaukee franchise has several sponsor candidates and will announce soon.

New (and existing) sponsors please provide a graphic similar to what's in the left column of BaseballMilwaukee.com and a URL to your website, homepage or foodspot.com page. If you don't have a site or page, please contact Shannon at Second Platform from the link on the bottom of our webpage. It is very reasonable to set up a homepage or an entire website. All sponsors will also have an ad on our Schedule Poster which we anticipate printing and distributing about 500 to local businesses- you will be receiving a short information form soon for this purpose.
Our next Manager's meeting is Sunday February 26th at Long Wongs at 7pm.
